New Baby Ideas

Introducing your baby to the family dog is something many new parents may face. This process can take some time but with a few tips can be a more positive experience. Many dogs may feel neglected with a new baby in the home so be sure to spend time with the dog.

Often dogs may experience stress from the sounds and smells a new baby brings to the house. The use of a realistic baby doll or playing baby sounds may also help to train the dog to be gentle and not do anything harmful to a real baby. Bringing home a blanket that smells like the baby may also be done to allow the dog time to become accustomed to the smell. Keep treats on hand to give to the dog to reinforce positive and calm interaction with the baby to instill good behavior. Toys may also be used but this can sometimes be confusing to the dog when the baby learns to grab the toys.

Use clear commands when the dog and baby interact. If your dog has not been trained, consider enrolling in a few dog obedience class to teach it basic commands that can be used as necessary. Avoid yelling or sudden movements when the baby is near the dog to avoid confusion or hostility.

Regardless of the breed it is important to always supervise the dog when it is around the baby. If the dog does exhibit behavior that may endanger the baby remove it from the room and discourage the behavior. Always reward positive behavior to help the dog associate the baby with being calm and gentle.
