There is an abundance of literature and books trying to inform new Moms-to-be about what to expect, but speaking from personal experience and despite how much you have read, you truly don’t know until you have expected!

This is a not a practical article from the sense of giving birth, but more some food for thought about what to expect during the first few weeks after your baby is born.

There is no doubt the first few weeks of a new baby’s life is such a steep learning curve for new parents. There are no manuals to follow and you have such a lot of new tasks to master. Sleep deprivation also does little to help your progress. As a new parent, you basically learn on the job. As time goes by your job slowly gets that little bit easier. The first few weeks with a newborn are undoubtedly a testing time but everyone gets through it, usually with the help from your partner, friends and family. After the first 6 weeks have passed, new parents begin to have a sense of achievement and pride with regard to what they are doing. Things slowly start to fall into place, your baby starts to sleep a little longer, you now recognize the different cries for hunger, tiredness and you, yourself are getting more rest and can now maybe take a shower in peace! Life starts to become enjoyable and normal again and you feel like you are doing a good job.

During the first few weeks it also helps to talk to friends and family about how you feel and are coping. There is a lot to take in and you can become stressed, tired and overawed by the whole experience. People are only too willing to listen and help so new Moms, please don’t feel you have to do absolutely everything for your new baby. There are no right and wrongs when it comes to bringing up a baby, just experiences which we can enjoy and learn from. Everyone has their own ideas on how to do things and it is important to respect others views and opinions, even if they may be different from your own. Avoid comparing yourself with other new Moms. Sometimes, this can be hard as everyone wants to share how they are doing but sometimes new Moms place extra stress on themselves worrying if they are doing things right and being a good Mom.

Bringing home a new baby can be exciting and nerve-wracking. While the thought of finally having the pregnancy over with is a relief, bringing home a baby creates a whole new host of issues. It is pretty much a given that you’re going to be rattling your brain to find a good means of sleeping not to mention a way to keep your schedule from reaching a total point of upheaval.

Sleep is important, but in those first few weeks, or months for some, this might seem like it’s impossible to be had. The key to this is to take naps when your baby does. If you have the great fortune of being at home (and most people will because of maternity leave), then you need to adapt your baby’s sleep patterns yourself. In order to keep baby’s naps regular during the day, you should try to keep daylight a factor in everything. Many babies have issues with mixing up night and day past the first four weeks of their lives when parents or relatives put them in the dark for every nap. This can spell trouble for you later on.

Learning to identify your baby’s schedule is as simple as taking up a piece of paper and a notepad. Once you have a general idea of how your baby is sleeping and at what times, you can help yourself by staying on schedule. Feeding your baby on at regular intervals during the day will help and you can easily identify an eating pattern in the first few weeks of life. As a result, you will find that your nights might be interrupted, but you’re much more willing to give up a few hours when you’ve all ready caught up during the day.

Bringing home baby can be such an awarding experience! There are a few things that every new parent should know, these little bundles of joy require so much attention ,and do not come with instructions. Hopefully, some of these tips will help. Make sure that you have a good safe car seat to bring baby home. Never put rear facing car seats in the front seat. It is a good idea for someone to drive the mommy home, and mommy and baby ride in the backseat together.

The little suction bulb they give you at the hospital comes in handy, for cleaning up the mucus left from the birthing, keep it close by for those incidents that you may need to use when least expected. When lying the baby down for nap or bedtime, make sure the newborn is lying on his or her back. This is recommended to help prevent SIDS. (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). When or before the baby is 12 weeks old, take the bumper pads out of the crib and keep the crib clear of pillows, stuffed animals, and other things that could cause suffocation.

The new baby will need to be fed, bathed, diaper changed, and care for the umbilical cord. Sponge the baby with luke warm water, until the cord comes off. Alcohol dabbed on with a cotton ball can help this occur, sometimes sooner than the expected. When the cord falls off give baths in baby tub, make sure to test the water temp. Feed the baby every 3 to 4 hrs up to 4 oz of formula or if breast feeding every two hours, 20 minutes on each breast. Change the little ones diaper when it is wet or poopy. Hope these tips help, enjoy the little bundle of joy.

The immediate weeks before your new baby arrives can be, not only the most suspenseful time in your life, but also the busiest. There are many things that need and have to be accomplished before your baby arrives. Many times we don’t consider the true extent of what needs to be done until after the fact and realizing that some detail was missed. This is a good reason why making a “to do” list is very vital. Using a list will insure that you accomplish, not only the major points, but also the minor things that you want done as well. The question becomes; “what all do I need to do?” Here are a few pointers to steer you in the right direction of accomplishing all of your tasks.

The most obvious is to prepare the area your child will occupy. Many parents decide that they want their new baby to sleep in their room for a time, if this is the case then you will need to prepare your child’s area. Make certain that you have cleaned and organized it with the necessities such as diapering materials, clothing, blankets and so forth.

A new baby requires a lot of attention so you will want to make certain that you have gotten your household on some type of schedule and system, this makes it easier for you to accomplish the chores needed to run a smooth household. Making certain that your child’s things have a definite place will help considerably, you will always be able to find what you need if it has a place to call it’s own.

When your child is sick, you can almost tell right away. Sometimes it is a little harder for parents to understand when the best time to call a doctor is. While opinions vary there’s a general agreement from most people that you should call a doctor whenever you feel your baby is in pain, has a high fever, or isn’t acting like his or herself.

If your baby is in pain, it can be quite easy to tell. I little pressure on the tummy or a noticeable change when your child moves their legs or arms is a good way to tell if baby is in pain. While it might not be an external injury, babies in particular only cry for three things: dirty diapers, out of hunger, and when they’re not feeling well in general. Diagnosing your baby when you’re not an expert is never advised and doctors are there to help you, not hurt you.

Believe it or not, most doctors will tell you that a fever is a good thing because it shows that your baby’s immune system is working properly. A fever is a sign that your child’s body is trying to fight off an infection. There are certain thresholds for each age group, however, that when surpassed you should always consult a doctor. Most Pediatricians have an on-call doctor so you don’t have to feel guilty calling at all hours of the night.

Finally, if your baby is lethargic, exceptionally cranky, or just won’t stop crying no matter what you do, you should call a doctor immediately. If you’ve medicated baby and it just doesn’t seem to be helping you should also call for further instructions or be prepared for a hospital visit.

A new baby coming home; a joyous and scary situation. What to buy for the infant, how to baby proof, and what about other children or pets in the household. It seems like such a huge task, but it can easily be done.

After making sure you have the basics of a safe place for him to sleep, supplies for feeding, clothes and blankets, and a fully stocked first aid kit including a rectal thermometer, there is not much else to do but enjoy your new little bundle of beauty. However not everyone considers a few key things.

Make sure the crib is not near a window or vent. While sleeping, the body temperature can be greatly altered if there is a breeze from a window or if a heat output is too near. Get an air purifier to eliminate any pet hair, dust, etc in the air. Many allergies can form from inhaling foreign things. That little nose needs to be able to be clear.

If breastfeeding, there are certain foods you may need to avoid in addition to any allergies you may have. Dairy, nuts, seafood, spicy foods, and medications are a small list of things that could aggravate your infant through your breast milk.

When bathing your infant, have all the supplies you’ll need ready in the bathroom at arms reach. There are many stylish water temperature checkers to keep the water at the right temperature. Do not ever leave your baby in a room unattended, unless she is sleeping and you have a monitor.
There are many other things that will arise. Always go with your gut and the input of a knowledgeable friend or Dr, and most of all give your child all the love you have.

When you are bringing your new baby home from the hospital, you want to have the nursery ready for them. You will need several different things for the baby. The nursery is your own little room where you can put him down to sleep and feed your baby. You will spend a lot of time in this room in the next few months.

Your nursery can be a lot of fun to decorate. You can go with pink for a girl or blue for a boy. You can decorate in yellows or greens if you are waiting to find out the sex of your baby. Purchasing a crib set is the best way to go for this room. These sets come with several different pieces you will need for the room. They will have a crib sheet, crib bumper, diaper holder, and various other items. These will all match. This makes it a lot easier to decorate once you pick out this part of the babies room.

You will want to get a crib and a cute mobile to go over it for the baby to enjoy. Remember to put the crib bumper on the outside of the crib for safety. You can find different cute hangings to place on the wall. Pictures or fabric pieces can look great on the wall. Pick out a cute nightlight to go with the room. Do not forget some kind of rocking chair. This will be perfect for those late night feedings. Make the room look cute, but comfortable at the same time. Your baby will be happy as long as you are there with them.

Providing consistent, positive discipline for toddlers can be very challenging. Here are seven techniques to use during those sometimes difficult years. When these techniques are used consistently these tips can provide parents with valuable discipline tools.

Time out is the most well known form of discipline. A good guide line to use is one minute per year of age. When putting a toddler in the time out area parents may need to stand with or stand over the child until their time is up. When it is over, discuss with the child in simple words what they did wrong.

Use redirection to distract a toddler from undesired behavior or dangerous situations. Direct the toddler to something safer or desired.

Sometimes ignoring the behavior is the best option. This is especially effective for tantrums. Ignoring the tantrum can make a dramatic, emotional episode more calm for discussion. Don’t indulge the child by giving them attention during a tantrum.

Model cooperative and positive behavior with other children and family members in your home. Use words like “please” and “thank you” rather than demand a task to completed.

Maintain structure in the toddler’s environment. Many problems can be avoided and positive behavior encouraged by simply making the child’s environment less likely to have less “no” situations.

Set boundary’s. Boundary’s provide security, so make some “no option rules”. For example, a rule may be that parent and child always hold hands in the parking lot or crossing the street.

Finally use lots of praise. Catch your child doing something good and reward them!

When bringing home a new baby, a babysitter is sometimes needed to help out with the care of the new child. A babysitter can either watch the baby on their own while the parents are at work or doing errands, or just help take care of the baby as needed while adjusting to having a new baby in the house.

Finding a babysitter can be done in several ways. Word of mouth can be helpful in finding a babysitter. Neighbors, coworkers or even church members may know someone reliable who can care for a baby. Asking other parents can also help as they may have a favorite babysitter or have recommendations. Another option is to use community message boards online or through other local groups to find out if anyone has a babysitter recommendation.

Other resources for babysitters can be found online as there are several sites that offer databases for sitters. While the content may vary, often the sites will offer feedback and references which can be useful for new parents. When picking a new babysitter always ask for references and interview the sitter before agreeing to services to be sure that they are capable.

After choosing a babysitter, make sure that they do know what to do in case of an emergency and provide any phone numbers necessary before leaving the sitter alone. In some cases such as with childhood allergies or other health conditions it may be advisable to find a sitter who knows CPR and has basic first aid knowledge.

Almost everybody understands that babies are sweet and cuddly.

They wear adorable and funny looking clothing. There is no other stage of life when a person can wear loudly patterned clothing without having to deal with snide comments. Most people think that there isn’t much to being a baby. They think that babies come out of the womb as fully formed humans but without the ability to express themselves properly. The truth is that babies are complex little creatures with their own sets of needs and abilities. Here are some facts about babies that might be new to you.

Babies are not skilled at telling the difference between most of the colors they see.

Not only does it take a while for the synapses in a baby’s brain to fully connect, their eyes take a few months to mature as well. Babies see primary colors better than any other, which is why you should choose those colors for his nursery and toys. Bold and bright colors like reds and greens and blues or even white and black are the easiest colors for babies to see. Pastels are better for adult eyes.

Believe it or not, this is why a baby will sometimes favor certain toys. What this means is that all of the black and white stuff that you think of as ugly is actually better for your baby’s eyesight and brain development than the more traditional and popular pastel based decorations and toys.

Odd as it might sound, some babies come out with some teeth already in place! Other kids don’t start getting their teeth in until they are between a year and eighteen months old.

No parent looks forward to having their baby start teething. There is no right age for teething to start so don’t start to freak out if it happens “too early” or “takes too long” to start. There is no guarantee when it comes to childhood development even in a family with lots of kids-your baby will grow at the pace that nature has intended for him and him alone.

Did you know that babies grow tails?

That’s right! Your baby’s tail starts to form at the same time that the other organs like the brain and the heart and the lungs begin to develop.

The tail will begin to disappear as the rest of the baby’s body takes shape as it grows inside the mother’s womb. It is not unlike the way frogs develop from tadpoles. Some people have extra long tails that do not get completely absorbed and are born with small tails that are still intact. Surgical removal and waiting for it to be grown into are the two options that are available to parents whose babies are born with intact tails. You won’t have to worry about the affect to your baby if you have the tail removed-it does not affect your baby’s health and the surgery is pretty simple. Scientists learn new things about infant and child development every day. What we know to be true right now could be debunked tomorrow! Are you really surprised by how confusion most people find infancy since you now know how rapidly new discoveries are being made? With a little effort anyone can keep up with all of the new discoveries being made. There is more to being a baby than being a human of low function. Babies are creatures with a decidedly intact set of needs. Learning how to communicate with them is very important. Learning everything you can about how babies develop is also important. The more you know, the stronger a parent you will be!
